An earlier kick-off at Calverton meant an earlier start for the travelling Long Eaton team and supporters. Long Eaton received a warm welcome from the Calverton MW team manager and supporters.
The game kicked off with Long Eaton producing some of their best football of the season so far. The passing moves throughout the team were tremendous with Long Eaton battling and creating chances against a very competent Calverton team.
With 19 minutes gone and Long Eaton unable to turn all their quality play into goals, Calverton MW delivered a sucker punch from their first real opportunity of the game. Long Eaton did not let their heads go down, they kept to the task, believing in themselves and driven on by the enthusiastic supporters. Just before half-time, Long Eaton got their reward for all their good play through Owen scoring a fantastic goal from distance to square the game and set things up nicely for an exciting second half.
Half time score 1 v 1.
The second half continued with more quality football from both teams. Seven minutes following the restart saw three goals in quick succession, Euan scored from close range for his first of the game which was cancelled out by Calverton MW a minute later. Two minutes later Euan scored his second to make it 3 – 2 to Long Eaton.
Long Eaton kept playing superb football, with good distribution to the front players from the defence and midfield. All credit to Calverton MW, they worked hard and looked dangerous when given the chance. Long Eaton all but settled the match with 10 minutes to go with Leon firing in a well positioned shot from distance and with a minute to go Samuel got a well deserved goal shortly after being tackled hard by a Calverton MW defender. Calverton MW got a consolation goal just before the final whistle.
Final Score 3 v 5.
In summary, ‘What a performance’, Long Eaton supporters will be talking about this game for some time and rightly so. Calverton MW played their part in a hard fought quality game but Long Eaton was the better side on the day, with all players producing excellent football. Credit to both sets of players and supporters for making the game so enjoyable with a special thank you to Calverton MW for the hospitality shown to Long Eaton on the day.
