This had been an eagerly awaited fixture against the team that was promoted along with Long Eaton at the end of last season and both teams would be looking to put on a good performance. With the recent heavy rain, the conditions for this fixture were always going to be difficult for both teams.
In the first half of the match, both teams struggled to make their mark with Wilford Mavericks just edging it with the slightly more determined football. Wilford Mavericks game plan appeared to be, defend in numbers, release the ball quickly to a front player, hold the ball until support arrives, then attack.Their game plan was effective to a point but the Long Eaton midfielders and defenders dealt with their attacks quite comfortably, turning defense into attack.
Long Eaton was unlucky when a great cross was headed powerfully by Ethan against the bar, with Wilford Mavericks reacting quickest to clear the danger. When the halftime whistle arrived, the game was evenly balanced. Half time score 0 v 0. The start of the second half saw Wilford Mavericks taking the game to Long Eaton and three minutes after the restart they scrambled a goal over the line to make it one nil to the visitors.
Roared on by both sets of supporters, the teams upped their games with Wilford Mavericks sensing a win and Long Eaton determined not loose their unbeaten record. At that point, the game could have gone either way.
As the game went on Long Eaton were looking stronger and creating more of the chances. Then on fifteen minutes, Euan struck the equaliser with the keeper unlucky not to keep hold of the ball as it crossed the line.
As Wilford Mavericks appeared to be tiring, Long Eaton piled on the pressure with powerful shots from Samuel and Ben being saved superbly by their keeper. Wilford Mavericks still looked dangerous on the attack but the Long Eaton goalkeeper and defense were on top form.
Just when it appeared the game was heading for a draw, Ben fired in a last minute shot that went through a crowded box and into the corner of the net. The goal was met by celebrations from both the players and their supporters.
Final Score 2 v 1.
In summary, under difficult playing conditions, it was a well balanced, hard fought game played out by two teams determined to play quality football. It must noted, that barely a free kick was conceded which is a credit to the two managers and the way they believe the game should be played.Well done to the Long Eaton boys who continue to keep their unbeaten record going.
Long Eaton United would like to thank the visiting Wilford Maverick team, their management and supporters who are always welcome.
